This rare print, circa 1897, is regarded as one of, if not the finest game-in-progress art print of the 19th century. The illustration was created by a Canadian born artist who settled in Boston, named Henry “Hy” Sandham. Sandham was very successful as an illustrator of books, portraits, and historic battle paintings. The print was published by Brussad, Valadou & Company, Paris-London-New York.



To collector’s this print is commonly referred to as “TheTemple Cup Print” because it depicts a game believed to be an 1894 Temple Cup Series game between the New York Giants and Baltimore Orioles played at New York’s Polo Grounds. The Temple Cup Series (1894-1897) was a post-season series of best-of-seven games played between the first and second place teams of the National League, and is regarded as the predecessor to today’s World Series.
